Scott Rasmussen's Number of the Day for December 8, 2023
The Number of the Day columns published on Ballotpedia reflect the views of the author.
December 8, 2023: Twenty percent (20%) of Colorado’s school board elections were canceled this year. That’s because, in Colorado, school districts can cancel their elections if there aren’t enough candidates. That happened in 75 of Colorado’s 178 school districts.
In most cases, this means that people who filed to run automatically win election to the school board. In total, 198 of the state’s 978 school board members were elected by default. If nobody runs, it creates a vacancy that the board must fill before the end of the year, which happened in 24 cases this year.
