February 03, 2023: On February 3, 1690, the Massachusetts Bay Colony issued the first paper money in North America, initially £40,000, which they used to pay their troops.[1]

Today, more than $2 trillion of U.S. currency is in circulation, made up of more than 53 billion individual notes.[2]
