February 1, 2021: Sixteen (16) states saw their population decline in 2020, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.[1]
The list included four of the six New England states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Three other major northeastern states also saw population declines—New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.[1]
The other nine states losing population were California, Michigan, Ohio, Alaska, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia.[1]
In raw numbers, the biggest population gains were found in Texas and Florida. On a percentage basis, the biggest increases were found in Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.[1]
