February 18, 2019: As the nation celebrates Presidents Day, 90% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the nation’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.[1]

A ScottRasmussen.com survey also found that 88% have a favorable opinion of our nation’s first president, George Washington.

Lincoln is noted both for the Emancipation Proclamation and for holding the Union together during the Civil War. He was assassinated shortly after the war ended.

Washington led the colonies in their fight for independence and turned down the chance to be king. He could have served as president for life but stepped down after two terms, establishing a precedent that lasted a century and a half. That precedent was later enshrined as a constitutional amendment.

It turned out to be a good thing that Washington stepped down after two terms because he died just three years after leaving office. Had he served another term and died in office, that might have set a far less wholesome precedent of presidents serving for life.

Washington’s birthday was February 22, and Lincoln was born on February 12.

Earlier Numbers of the Day noted that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is viewed favorably by 90% and that Alexander Hamilton is viewed favorably by 66%.
