February 2, 2026: One hundred and thirty-nine years ago, on February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day was celebrated for the first time. The origin of the celebration comes from an old Christian tradition called Candlemas. Clergy would give out candles during the winter, with the candles representing the length of winter and how cold it might be. It would be the Germans who would add an animal to the tradition. In Germany the hedgehog was used for predictions, but when Germans started to settle in Pennsylvania, they switched to the groundhog.[1]
