January 10, 2018: During the first nine months of the Trump administration, the number of permanent federal government jobs was reduced by 16,000. Still, The Washington Post reports, there remain a total of 1.94 million federal jobs.[1]
The Post calls this a "significant down payment on his campaign pledge to shrink the federal bureaucracy." The White House has notified several agencies that further cuts may be coming in the future.
By way of contrast, 68,000 permanent federal jobs were added during the first nine months of Barack Obama’s presidency. Over the course of President Obama’s eight years in office, the number of federal jobs increased by 188,000.
An earlier Number of the Day reported that 15.3 percent of U.S. workforce is on the government payroll.
