January 15, 2021: In 2020, there was a 74% increase in the number of homicides in Seattle compared to 2019. That was the largest increase in the nation, but five other cities experienced at least a 50% increase: New Orleans (62%), Atlanta (58%), Chicago (56%), Boston (54%), and Portland (52%).[1]
The nation’s two largest cities—New York and Los Angeles—saw homicides increase by 39% and 30%, respectively.[1]
