January 25, 2019: In the 12 months ending July 2017, approximately 47 million Americans had a massage.[1] That total includes 21% of the nation’s women and 16% of men. A spa was the most likely spot for a massage, but therapists work in a wide variety of settings.
All that activity is enough to make massage therapy a $16 billion industry.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, 89% of massage therapists are female, and the median age is 46. Most are sole practitioners spending just under 20 hours each week providing massage and earning about $58 an hour.
There are more than 300,000 massage therapists in the nation today, and they received an average of 665 hours of initial training.
