January 27, 2021: As of January 26, 2021, 37 states had orders in effect requiring individuals to wear masks in indoor or outdoor public spaces statewide.[1]
All 23 states with a Democratic governor had issued a statewide mask order. However, the 27 states with Republican governors are evenly divided. Fourteen (14) require face coverings, and 13 do not.[1]
