January 3, 2025: Sixty-six years ago, Alaska became the 49th state when it was admitted to the Union in 1959. President Eisenhower had wanted to admit Alaska into the Union during his presidency, but there were concerns over national security with its border with the then USSR, and the amount of public land. In Alaska, 99% of the land was owned by the federal government. This would need to be rearranged to allow for statehood.[1]
