January 9, 2019: Fifty-one percent (51%) of Nevada state legislators are women. It’s the first time in the history of the United States that women have held the majority of seats in any state legislature.[1]
Nevada now has 32 female legislators—nine in the state Senate and 23 in the state House. There are currently 31 men in the legislature.
While women have never before held a majority of any state’s combined representatives and senators, 10 years ago the New Hampshire Senate included a majority of women. Also, women now outnumber men in the Colorado House.
In Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, women make up more than 40 percent of legislators.
Western states took the lead in the women’s suffrage movement more than a century ago. Long before Congress acted and the 19th Amendment was passed, individual states gave women the right to vote. By the time Congress made it a part of the Constitution, not only did most states allow women to vote, but a woman had already served in the House of Representatives.
