July 12, 2024: 162 years ago, during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln officially signed into law the army’s Medal of Honor. This was done to acknowledge the heroism and acts of bravery shown by soldiers fighting in the war. In total, there have been 3,465 Medals of Honor awarded to service members. The majority of those were awarded during the Civil War, totaling 1,522 recipients.[1][2]
