July 16, 2024: 234 years ago, on July 16, 1790, the Residence Act was signed into law by President George Washington. This act was to secure the official and permanent residence for the capital of the United States. The stipulation was that President Washington had to find a location along the Potomac River. The area President Washington chose was near the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. After the decision was made and the act signed into law, Washington hired an engineer from France by the name of Pierre Charles L’Enfant to layout the city.[1]
