July 16, 2025: Eighty years ago, on July 16, 1945, the first ever atomic bomb was detonated at the Alamogordo Bombing Range in New Mexico. The detonation of this bomb was to test whether a bomb using plutonium would be effective. Famously, the testing of the bomb was led by J. Robert Oppenheimer, and would lead to the United States dropping two atomic bombs on Japan, one on August 6, 1945, on Hiroshima, and the second on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. This would ultimately lead to the end of the war with Japan in World War II.[1][2]
