July 18, 2018: The U.S. Supreme Court issued 74 rulings during the October 2017 term. By the time the final rulings were issued in June 2018, the court had overturned 52 lower court rulings and upheld 19. The Supreme Court was the initial jurisdiction for the remaining three cases.
The 70.3% reversal rate for the most recent term is fairly normal and very close to the average since 2007.
The Ninth Circuit, based in San Francisco, had 15 cases heard and 12 overturned. Both numbers are higher than for any other circuit court. That, too, is fairly normal. Over the past 11 years, the Ninth Circuit has had 126 opinions overturned. No other circuit has been overturned more than 52 times. (However, state courts collectively were overturned 95 times).
The Ninth Circuit is the largest circuit court with 29 active judicial posts. Proposals have been made to split it into two.
