July 2, 2025: Two hundred and forty-nine (249) years ago on July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress officially declared independence from Great Britain. It would be two days later, on July 4th, 1776, that the Declaration of Independence was officially approved by Congress. Throughout the history of this country, we have celebrated the Fourth as our Independence Day because of the approval of the Declaration of Independence, but John Adams was under the impression that Americans would want to celebrate independence on July 2nd. The American public would hear the Declaration of Independence for the first time on July 8, 1776 when Colonel John Nixon read it aloud in what would become Independence Square.[1]
