July 21, 2023: Since 2008, Californians have voted on 959 separate local parcel tax ballot measures. The parcel tax is a unique form of property tax that exists only in California and is based on a property’s characteristics rather than on its assessed value. Local governments began using them in 1978 after voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting property taxes.
So far this year, there have been nine parcel taxes on ballots in California. Eight have been approved and one was defeated.
