July 5, 2023: While it was always intended to be an online marketplace, the company did not open its online storefront for 376 days after the company’s incorporation. Bezos’ parents gave him an investment of nearly $250,000 to aid the start-up. In the months after opening online, Amazon was bringing in $20,000 per week, and selling in 50 states and 45 countries.[1]
Today, the company sells to over 180 countries, and has over 300 million active consumer accounts on their website. As of 2020, Amazon employed 1.3 million people and brought in $514 billion USD in 2022 alone, for a rate of $9.88 billion per week.[2]
