June 13, 2019: Fifty-two (52) years ago today, Thurgood Marshall became the first African American nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court.[1] Nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Marshall was confirmed by the Senate in August. He took his seat on the Court in October.
Prior to joining the Court, Marshall won 29 of the 32 cases he argued before it. Most notable was the Brown v. Board of Education case in which the Supreme Court declared school segregation unconstitutional.[2]
Earlier in his life, segregation policies had denied Marshall entry into the University of Maryland School of Law. He then attended Howard University Law School, from which he graduated magna cum laude.
