June 19, 2017: With President Trump in the White House, conservatives' confidence in the economy has soared. Simmons Research found that 52 percent of conservatives expected the economy to get better in the coming 12 months. That’s a dramatic increase from the 20 percent who were optimistic before the election results came in.[1]

For liberals, the reaction was just the opposite. Prior to the election, 26 percent of those on the political left were upbeat about the nation’s economic future. Once President Trump took office, that number fell to 14 percent.[1]

This ideological response is typical. People tend to see what they want to see.

The results were less dramatic when it came to personal finances. Before the election, 38 percent of conservatives were optimistic about their personal finances. That jumped to 50 percent after inauguration day. For liberals, there was little change. Forty-three percent expressed optimism about their own finances before the election, and 46 percent said the same after Trump took office.[1]

This ideological response is typical. People tend to see what they want to see. As a result, they are more optimistic when their preferred candidate is in the White House.

In Politics Has Failed: America Will Not, I make the case that this obsessive focus on political figures is mistaken. The culture leads and politicians lag behind.
