June 28, 2024: 110 years ago, on June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The assassination by a Serbian nationalist precipitated the beginning of World War I, which would be fought over the next four years and would result in an estimated nine million military deaths, 23 million military wounded, and eight million civilian deaths.[1]
