June 5, 2017: Cultural changes often take place so incrementally that we rarely notice them. But when we look back just a generation or so, the magnitude of the changes is hard to miss.

In 1975, 43 percent of young adult women (ages 25-34) considered themselves to be homemakers. That number has fallen to 14 percent today.[1]

Today, 70 percent of young adult women are employed, up from 49 percent four decades ago.

Among all young adults—men and women—the number owning a home has fallen from 52 percent in 1975 to 29 percent today.

An earlier Number of the Day noted that 31 percent of all young adults now live with their parents, while 20 percent live with a spouse. That’s a dramatic change from 1975, when 57 percent lived with a spouse and 26 percent lived in their parents’ home.

There has also been a dramatic increase in the share of young adults with a college degree.
