Scott Rasmussen's Number of the Day for March 12, 2018

March 12, 2018: Forty-eight (48) of the nation’s 435 congressional districts do not have a Republican candidate. On the other side of the partisan divide, nine districts lack a Democratic candidate.
These districts lack a challenger partly because they have been designed to elect representatives from a particular political party. Rob Richie, executive director of FairVote, has spent years stating the uncomfortable truth that “American voters don’t select their Representatives, the Representatives select the voters.”[1]
While just 57 districts lack a pair of major party candidates, the lack of competition is the norm. An earlier Number of the Day noted that only 10% of all House races are considered competitive in 2018.
Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
- March 9, 2018 – 88% of young adults use social media platforms; just 37% of seniors do the same
- March 8, 2018 – 10 percent of All U.S. voters voted for Donald Trump but thought he was unqualified to serve as president
- March 7, 2018 – 17 Republican senators elected in 2016 did better than Donald Trump on Election Day
- March 6, 2018 – 10 U.S. cities with high-paying jobs and low cost of living
