March 17, 2023: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 30.4 million U.S. residents claimed Irish ancestry in 2019. That was equal to 9.2% of the country’s total population, and around six times the total population of Ireland itself. In Cook County, Illinois, there were more than 438,000 people of Irish decent, the most of any U.S. county. Around 112,000 foreign-born U.S. residents were born in Ireland.[1]
