March 22, 2017: Driven by health concerns, Americans are now consuming more bottled water than soda.

In 2016, bottled water became the leading beverage in the United States, surpassing soda for the first time ever. Last year, Americans drank an average of 39.3 gallons of bottled water and 38.5 gallons of carbonated soft drinks.

This is a dramatic change over the past decade. Ten years ago, Americans consumed almost twice as much soda as bottled water (50.4 gallons per capita for soda vs. 27.6 for bottled water).

“Bottled water's ascent coincided with and encouraged seismic shifts in consumer preferences for healthier refreshment and re-hydration,” according to the Beverage Marketing Corporation. It became the beverage of choice for consumers seeking a healthy and natural refreshment.

Consumption of bottled water has increased every year but two since 1977.

Lifestyle choices typically have a huge impact on personal health. The increased consumption of bottled water—with the reduced demand for soda—is one clear indication of the culture leading the nation to a healthier future.
