March 24, 2023: 141 years ago, on March 24, 1882, Robert Koch identified the bacteria causing tuberculosis. Twenty-three years later, he won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery, and March 24 is now known as World TB Day. At the time of Dr. Koch’s discovery, TB killed around 1 out of every 7 people in the United States and Europe. In 2019, the last year for which data are available, there were just 526 deaths from TB in the United States, which is less than 2 cases per million people in America.[1][2]
