March 26, 2019: The “Rise of the Rest” venture fund is looking to invest $150 million in parts of the country where venture capitalists rarely look—“places like Cincinnati, Memphis, and Salt Lake City.”[1]
As noted in a previous Number of the Day, the vast majority of venture capital investments go to a handful of coastal states. The Midwest received the smallest share of venture funding. With that in mind, AOL cofounder Steve Case launched a campaign to bring investment money to middle America.
In addition to making fairly standard venture investments, Case launched a bus tour that has “traveled 10,000 miles to 38 cities” over the last five years. Every stop features “a pitch competition, showcasing the best startups in each city.” Whoever makes the best pitch “takes home a $100,000 investment from the Rise of Rest Seed Fund.”[2]
