The Number of the Day columns published on Ballotpedia reflect the views of the author.
March 3, 2023: Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters say that it is realistic to expect people to remain married to one person for their entire life. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 40% say marriage is one of the most important social institutions in America, just 12% say it is one of the least important, and 40% say it is somewhere in between.
The survey also found that 21% say in most cases people should remain married for life, and an additional 40% say they should remain married unless one partner has an affair or is abusive. Twenty-six percent (26%) say people should remain married as long as the marriage is meeting their needs.
Methodology
The survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on February 14-16, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.
The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
