March 3, 2026: Ninety-five (95) years ago, on March 3, 1931, “The Star-Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key while he was detained on a British ship. On September 14, 1814, Key saw the British bomb Fort McHenry with over 1,800 bombs. Key was inspired to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” upon waking and seeing the flag at Fort McHenry still raised. While considered the national anthem, it would be over 100 years later that President Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order to make “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official anthem. Then, in March of 1931, Congress and President Herbert Hoover officially signed it into law.[1]
