March 4, 2024: Thirty years ago, on March 4, 1994, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on scientific mission STS-62, which focused on microgravity experiments and experiments designed to determine the effects of longer-term spaceflights on the human body.

The crew of five traveled almost six million miles and completed 224 orbits in the course of the 14 day-long mission. Just under nine years after this mission, in 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia was destroyed upon reentry in a tragedy that claimed the lives of all seven crew members onboard.[1]

In total, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on 28 flights over its 22 year life, completed 4,808 orbits around Earth, and was in space for more than 300 days.[1]

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
