May 17, 2023: Seventy-four percent (74%) of voters believe that social media companies and other websites should be required to obtain parental consent for users under 18. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that an even larger majority (85%) believe that those companies should have stricter rules regarding privacy for users under 18 than they have for adults.
The survey also found that 61% of voters believe social media companies and other websites should be held responsible if children access violent or pornographic content on their platforms without their parents’ permission, and 69% say it is reasonable to expect companies to be able to limit what is available to children under 18 while still allowing adults to access that content.
Methodology
The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on May 2-3, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.
The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
