May 18, 2023: Sixty-six percent (66%) of voters say that, when regulators impose rules opposed by the vast majority of voters, their actions constitute a threat to democracy. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 60% believe that regulators often impose rules opposed by most voters..

The survey also found that majorities believe there is generally a tradeoff between government regulation and individual freedom (59%), as well as between government regulation and democracy (53%).

Methodology

The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on May 4-5, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
