May 23, 2019: Under current law, immigrants can receive a green card if they have a spouse, child, sibling, or parent who is a U.S. citizen. Such family ties enabled 748,746 immigrants to receive green cards and permanent resident status in the United States during 2017. This accounted for 66% of legal permanent residents admitted to the country.[1]

A ScottRasmussen.com poll found that voters want to change that dynamic. Seventy-five percent (75%) believe that our immigration system should prioritize people with skills that could benefit the economy rather than granting legal status to people with relatives in the United States. That view is shared across partisan and demographic lines.[2]

In 2017, just 12% of those granted permanent resident status did so through employment-based visas.
