May 30, 2018: Among Americans aged 18-29, 61% watch television primarily through streaming services. Just 31% watch primarily through a cable or satellite subscription.[1]
That dynamic is dramatically different from older Americans. Even among those 30-49, a majority (52%) watch primarily through cable or satellite subscriptions. That figure jumps to 70% among those aged 50-64 and 84% among the 65+ crowd. Just 5% of senior citizens watch TV primarily through streaming services.

The changes in technology and viewing habits are having a major disruptive impact on the communications industry. Last year, for the first time ever, Netflix had more subscribers than the cable television industry. This year, for the first time ever, 50 percent of U.S. advertising sales will be on digital platforms.
Beyond streaming services, 18.7 million U.S. homes now have smart speakers.
Other Numbers of the Day have reported that:
- 49 percent of American adults say home broadband service is essential
- 11 percent of Americans don’t use the internet
- 88 percent of young adults use social media platforms; just 37% of seniors do the same
- 47 percent of parents are worried their children are addicted to their mobile device
- 49 hours of streamed video content are watched in the average OTT home in a month
