May 7, 2024: The U.S. fertility rate dropped to 54.4 births per 1,000 women ages 15-44 in 2023. This is a record low and down 3% from 2022. The birth rate for teenagers ages 15-19 was down 3%, to 13.2 per 1,000 women. Rates also declined for women ages 20-39, with that for 20-24 year old women reaching a record low of 55.4. The rates for women 40-49 remained unchanged.
Overall, the fertility rate remains well below replacement level as it has every year since 2007 and most years since 1971.[1]
