November 20, 2017: The election is still a year away, but 1,884 candidates have filed or publicly announced plans to run for a congressional seat in 2018. That total includes 1,675 seeking election to the U.S. House and 209 seeking election to the Senate.

There are 1,079 Democratic candidates, 662 Republican candidates, and 143 third-party or independent candidates. Collectively, they are seeking 435 House seats and 33 positions in the Senate.

The House elections feature 23 Republican seats potentially at risk in districts won by Hillary Clinton: AZ-02, CA-10, CA-21, CA-25, CA-39, CA-45, CA-48, CA-49, CO-06, FL-26, FL-27, IL-06, KS-03, MN-03, NJ-07, NY-24, PA-06, PA-07, TX-07, TX-23, TX-32, VA-10, and WA-08.

On the other side of the coin, there are 12 Democratic House seats from districts that President Donald Trump won in 2016: AZ-01, IA-02, IL-17, MN-01, MN-07, MN-08, NH-01, NJ-05, NV-03, NY-18, PA-17, and WI-03.

As for the Senate, only one Republican senator (Nevada’s Dean Heller) is running for re-election in a state won by Hillary Clinton.

There are 10 Democratic incumbents seeking re-election to the Senate from states won by Donald Trump: Jon Tester (Mont.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Bill Nelson (Fla.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Bob Casey, Jr. (Pa.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.), and Tammy Baldwin (Wis.).
