October 1, 2024: One hundred and twenty-one years ago (121) in 1903, the first game of the modern World Series was played by the Boston Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Boston Americans, who would later be renamed the Boston Red Sox, won five games to three in a best-of-nine series. Only two World Series have been missed since: one, in 1904 when the New York Giants decided against playing the Boston Americans, and a second in 1994 due to a strike that canceled much of that season.[1]
