October 16, 2024: One hundred and sixty-five years ago, the raid on Harpers Ferry was led by John Brown. The choice to raid Harpers Ferry in West Virginia was made because of its arsenal of weaponry and because it was located close to the South. The goal of the raid was to create a center for freed slaves from the surrounding area. Brown’s raid would ultimately prove unsuccessful. Seventeen of the twenty-one men involved, two of whom were Brown’s own sons, would die in the raid. Brown himself, and the other survivors would eventually be tried and hanged. This raid would be an important precursor to the Civil War, which would begin within two years.[1]
