October 17, 2025: Two hundred and forty-eight years ago, on October 17, 1777, the United States defeated the British in the Battle of Saratoga. Fighting had been going on in the region since the summer until, eventually, on October 13, close to 20,000 Americans surrounded British forces. The British general John Burgoyne would surrender the 5,000 troops that were under his command. This victory would be heard by King Louis XVI of France, and would be influential in his decision to provide assistance to the United States.[1]
