October 2, 2023: Sixty-five years ago, on October 2, 1958, Guinea gained its independence. Guinea was established as a colony of France in 1898, and declared its independence 60 years later, just four days after the Fifth French Republic decided to give autonomy to any colony that chose independence.[1]

In the first 26 years after gaining independence, the government held elections with only one political party eligible for candidacy. The first president of independent Guinea, Ahmed Sékou Touré, was elected and re-elected for four consecutive seven-year terms.[1]

Today, the country is divided into eight regions, each with its own capital city. The national capital city is Conarky, which has a population of 1,675,069, which is 12.3 percent of the nation’s total population of 13,607,249. With 94,926 square miles of land area, Guinea has a population density of 105.9 people per square mile.[1]
