October 27, 2023: As of October 1, 2023, President Joe Biden has nominated 182 Article III judges, 29% below the average of his three most recent predecessors—former Presidents Donald Trump (R), Barack Obama (D), and George W. Bush (R) - at this point in their first terms.
Article III judges are those who serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of International Trade, or one of the 13 U.S. courts of appeal or 94 U.S. district courts. These are all federal judges, and all are lifetime presidential appointments subject to Senate confirmation. At this point in their terms, President Trump had nominated 282 Article III judges, President Obama had nominated 214, and President Bush had nominated 271.
