October 29, 2018: On Halloween this year, 175 million Americans will spend $9 billion to celebrate. The total is very close to last year’s all-time high of $9.1 billion and works out to an average of $86.79 per person.[1]

The National Retail Federation reports that “consumers plan to spend $3.2 billion on costumes (purchased by 68 percent of Halloween shoppers), $2.7 billion on decorations (74 percent), $2.6 billion on candy (95 percent) and $400 million on greeting cards (35 percent).”[1]

The top costumes for children this year are their favorite princess (3.8 million) or superhero (2.5 million). Millions will also dress up as Batman, a Star Wars character, or a witch.

Nearly half (48%) of adult celebrants will dress up as well. More than 7 million will don a witch’s costume. Vampires, zombies, and pirates are also high on the list.
