October 4, 2018: Between October 2011 and November 2017, there were 259 documented cases of people who died while taking a selfie.[1] However, researchers noted that the actual number is almost certainly higher.
“The top three causes of deaths were drowning, being hit by a vehicle, or falling,” noted Mack Lamoureux on Vice. “In terms of the vehicle-related deaths the biggest killer has been people trying to get that perfect shot in front of a moving train.”[2]
The average victim of a “selficide” is 23, and 73% are male. Not surprising, most are the result of risky behavior.
The report calls for the creation of “no selfie zones” in many tourist areas.
