October 5, 2017: Within couples, 28% of women earn more than their husband or partner. That’s a dramatic increase from 12% in 1980, 19% in 1990, and 23% in 2000.[1]
The Pew Research Center reports that men today earn more in 69% of couples. That’s down from 87% in 1980.[1]
Seventy-one percent (71%) of Americans believe that, for a man to be a good husband or partner, the ability to provide for a family is very important. Only 32% say that the same is true for a woman to be a good wife or partner.
According to the Pew Center, “Adults with lower incomes and less education are more likely to place a high value on a spouse or partner’s ability to provide for a family – whether that spouse is a man or a woman.“
