September 13, 2018: Heading into the fall election season, Democrats have nominated 180 female candidates for the House of Representatives. That tops the previous record of 120.[1]
Republicans have selected 52 female nominees.
The Democrats have also nominated 133 people of color and 158 first-time candidates to run for the House.
“In the 125 districts where a Democratic incumbent is leaving office or a Republican seat is at risk of flipping,” Politico reports that “more than half the [Democratic] nominees (65) are women."
Politico believes this “flood of women, minorities and first-time candidates is poised to radically alter the composition of Congress next year.”
