September 17, 2025: One hundred and sixty-three (163) years ago on September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam took place. This Civil War battle became the bloodiest single day of combat for the U.S. military. The battle saw Major General George B. McClellan defend Northern soil for the first time during the war against Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Of the 100,000 soldiers involved in the combat, there were 23,000 casualties, with 3,600 killed. Of the 23,000 casualties, 15,000 were Confederates.[1]
