September 20, 2024: An average of 2.2 candidates filed per seat across federal and statewide offices as of September 9. In statewide primaries, 12,081 candidates ran for 5,890 seats. This gives an average of 2.05 candidates per seat. As for congressional primaries, 1,993 candidates ran for 469 seats for an average of 4.25 candidates running per seat.
