September 24, 2018: Amazon may open up to 3,000 new AmazonGo cashierless stores in the next few years.[1] The company currently has four such stores: three in Seattle and one in Chicago.

According to Bloomberg News, “Two of the new stores offer only a limited selection of salads, sandwiches and snacks. ... Two other stores, including the original AmazonGo, also have a small selection of groceries, making it more akin to a convenience store.”

Each of the new stores requires more than a million dollars in hardware to launch. That would bring the total to more than $3 billion for 3,000 stores. People check in using a smartphone app. After that, “sensors and computer-vision technology detect what shoppers take and bills them automatically.” From a convenience point of view, this eliminates the need for checkout lines.
