September 24, 2025: Two hundred and thirty-six (236) years ago, on September 24, 1789, President George Washington signed into law the Judiciary Act of 1789. This act created the Supreme Court. Originally, the court had six justices who, like today, served lifetime terms or retired. The original six justices who Washington appointed were John Jay, John Rutledge, William Cushing, John Blair, Robert Harrison, and James Wilson, and were all confirmed by the Senate.[1]
