September 3, 2024: One hundred and forty-two (142) years ago, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. Twenty-three (23) more states were celebrating Labor Day by 1894. In 1894, Labor Day was officially made a national holiday when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law on June 28. This ensured that the first Monday of every September would be celebrated as Labor Day.[1]
